Picard (Patrick Stewart) receives orders to beam up Tam Elburn (Harry Groener), a Betazoid who specializes in first contact with life-forms. The Starship is to transport Tam to a distant star system to contact Tin Man, an alien intelligence that resembles a spaceship. The crew's mission is to intercept Tin Man before the Romulans, who may try to destroy the life-form. When the Enterprise arrives in the Tin man's star system, the starship is attacked by a Romulan Warbird. Without warning, tam sends a telepathic warning to Tin Man, which destroys the Warbird and seriously damages the Enterprise. Tam pleads with Picard to let him beam aboard Tin Man.
